Horse Aging: From Colt to Senior
Understanding how horses age, how to estimate age from teeth, and what AAEP says about senior horse care. Real numbers and practical advice.
The AAEP Formula
The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) uses a non-linear formula for horse aging because horses don't age at a constant rate. The first year is relatively slow (6.5 human years), the middle years are moderate, and aging accelerates again in the later years:

Aging by Teeth
Estimating a horse's age by its teeth is a skill veterinarians still use, especially for horses with unknown histories. The lower incisors erupt and wear in predictable patterns. A horse has 12 incisors (6 upper, 6 lower) that develop distinct wear surfaces called "hooks" and "cups" as they age. By 5, all permanent incisors are in place. By 11, the cups have worn off all lower incisors.
After age 10, the dental aging method becomes less precise — Galvayne's groove (a dark line on the upper corner incisor) appears around 10 and disappears around 30, but the timing varies between individuals. The AAEP recommends combining dental examination with overall physical assessment for more accurate aging in older horses.
Life Stages
The AAEP divides the horse's life into five stages: foal (birth to 6 months), yearling (6 months to 2 years), young horse (2-5 years), mature adult (5-15 years), and senior (15+ years). The mature adult stage is the longest and most variable — a well-managed horse can remain sound and active well into its 20s, while a horse with joint damage or poor dental care may decline significantly by 15.
Senior horses need biannual dental floating (filing sharp enamel points), regular hoof care, weight monitoring, and blood work to catch early kidney, liver, or endocrine issues. The AAEP recommends transitioning senior horses to easier-to-chew feed — soaked hay cubes, senior-specific pellets, or complete feeds — as dental wear makes it harder for them to process long-stem hay.
What Extends a Horse's Active Years
Consistent, low-impact exercise. Horses that are turned out daily and walked or lightly ridden tend to stay sound longer than horses that are stalled for long periods and then worked hard on weekends. Joint supplements (glucosamine, hyaluronic acid) have modest evidence supporting their use in managing early osteoarthritis. Weight management is critical — overweight horses develop laminitis, a painful and potentially fatal condition of the hoof.
Dental care is the most overlooked factor. A horse with sharp enamel points or missing teeth can't chew properly, loses weight, and becomes more vulnerable to colic — the leading cause of death in horses. The AAEP recommends dental exams at least annually, with floating as needed.
Retirement and End of Life
A 25-year-old horse at rest is roughly equivalent to a 73-year-old human. That's not ancient, but it's well into the range where quality-of-life decisions become necessary. Lameness that doesn't respond to treatment, significant weight loss despite adequate nutrition, and chronic dental problems that prevent proper chewing are all indicators that a horse's quality of life is declining.
